A ‘VOTE BLUE’ SOCIAL MEDIA GROUP BY ARTISTS + EDUCATORS

ABOUT

We worked relentlessly in previous elections to save our democracy; our work is far from over. From voter suppression and gerrymandering to inequality, we now turn our attention to those issues that are key to maintaining our democracy. This group was born to motivate us to do the work of transformation. Our growth proves that informed people can become positively connected by social media. We hope that our “Vote Blue” content will assist your efforts to educate and inspire those around you. We pledge to continue providing a framework for helping blue causes as we work towards a more progressive union.

Postcard Disco is a block of time set aside for us to engage in collective virtual activism. We’ll be writing ‘Get Out the Vote’ postcards to swing state voters, all while listening to DJs spinning live. Log on, listen, and get into the activist groove. It’s not hard—and we can do it together. Check the links below for how to get involved. If postcards aren’t your thing—or if you’ve finished writing postcards and are looking to make a bigger impact, how about texting? Go here to learn about “tripling the vote” via text. We’ll see you on the dance floor.

VIRTUAL PANEL 2

ABOUT THE DISCUSSION:

Voting should be easy and widely accessible. Unfortunately, we’ve all seen the footage of all-day polling place lines, and heard the news stories about voter list purges. These man-made obstacles disproportionately affect communities of color in comparison to their white counterparts. Historically, this phenomenon isn’t new and speaks to issues and policies that have disallowed equitable voting in the USA for centuries. Given that an extraordinarily important election is approaching, and the current administration is working towards hindering voter turnout, how do we ensure BIPOC communities are able to vote and have those votes counted? How can white allies step up their support of BIPOC to counter the additional obstacles that are thrown their way? From checking to confirm someone is registered, to making sure they have transportation to the polls on Election Day, to holding whomever is in the White House accountable to its people, this panel will explore the role of voting in our collective history, and concrete ways to make sure the voices from BIPOC communities are heard and their vote counted.

VIRTUAL PANEL 1

ABOUT THE DISCUSSION:

Every campaign needs volunteers, but lots of people don’t know how to get involved, especially if they don’t live in the same state as the candidate they want to help out. Some people are afraid to phone bank, or are nervous to knock on doors. They might not know that texting for a campaign doesn’t mean their phone number is sent out to strangers. This panel will cover the variety of volunteer options campaigns have and help viewers determine which option feels right for them.

MERCH!

Wear your “Vote Blue” pride on your sleeve! We hope you have as much fun checking out these items as we had designing them. When you click on any item below, you’ll be brought to our online store. There, the options are endless as you can customize items as you see fit.

Where does the money go?

We wanted to be a nonprofit, but due to our political bent, we weren’t eligible. We were advised by multiple allies who regularly work on campaigns to simply be a for-profit venture that gets the message out to “Vote Blue”. Any slim profit margin will go to the artists that designed the products.

Poster Downloads

As Artists and Educators, we are excited by the intersection of Art and Social Justice. With that in mind, we created three different digital download posters in 2020 that are still available. The posters cover these areas of focus: 1) the BIPOC community, 2) the LGBTQ+ community, and 3) Working Families. They were released once a month in the run up to the 2020 election in August, September, and October. We only ask you provide a small fee of $5-10 (sliding scale) directly to the artist. Download and payment details are listed under each poster. See below for the Instagram accounts of the artists that created our posters.

Artist Spotlight / October: Josh Koll

I’m an illustrator, designer, video producer, and photographer.

I graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in art (photography and video), then immediately moved to NYC where I spent the next nine years working in media and television.

I have cast and produced episodes of Emmy Award-winning docu-series MTV’s Made, did casting and development for major networks and cable networks (TLC, MTV, the CW, Discovery Communications), produced, shot, and edited dozens of hours of online video content for major book publishers like Hyperion Books, HarperCollins, Entertainment Weekly, and also Passport Magazine, the country’s largest gay travel Magazine, for which I recently completed a series of Lexus-sponsored advertorial travel videos. I was the contributing illustrator for the 2016 NYC Pride Guide (circulation of 100,000), which included the cover image, and in 2018 I was honored have the opportunity to create the key art and marketing collateral for the 45th Annual Castro Street Fair, which was founded by my personal hero Harvey Milk. My photography is on display and for sale at the William Scott Gallery in Provincetown, MA.

l have been snapping photos, drawing, and shooting video since I was a kid. Some programs I use in my work: Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Illustrator, InDesign, ProCreate, Adobe Draw, After Effects.

Below are a few other images grabbed from Josh’s Instagram account. To see more of his art, visit his website here.

Artist Spotlight / September:  J Manuel Carmona

Having been born in Texas along the Mexican border, raised in Mexico, and then spending the majority of my adult life in the USA, my work is greatly informed by my binational Mexican/American heritage, my queer identity, and the intersection of the LGBTQI and Latino communities of San Francisco. I have explored these communities and concepts through varied and diverse artistic approaches, creating murals, posters, sculptures, and art installations that in some way satisfy my own personal curiosity, respond to the immediate context, honor the message, and impact the spectator. As I continue to explore the power of public art, I hope to use my work to inspire individuals with the pride and love that I feel for my two countries of heritage, my LGBTQI community, and to bring focus to the duality of millions of Mexican-Americans living and traveling between both sides of this border.

Below are some of the amazing murals that Manuel has worked on in San Francisco. Be sure to check out more of his work on Instagram @manuel165.

Artist Spotlight / AUGUST: Heather Polk

Heather is a sales and marketing professional with an active art practice that fills her nights and weekends. She resides in Chicago where she relocated from Atlanta almost 10 years ago. She is working toward establishing a small art studio that will deliver programming for sufferers of chronic disease so that they, and their caretakers, may utilize the empowerment of artistic creativity as a vital part of their disease management. Her art practice is centered around collage and abstract painting. Heather is passionate about helping elect leaders that will help her son, his entire generation and future generations realize their best, which means electing leaders that want to do what’s best FOR ALL AMERICANS.

Below are some of the other pieces that caught our eye from Heather’s Instagram account (@artcuresall.) Be sure to check out more of her work at artcuresall.com.
